A night crew can leave a lobby perfect at 11 p.m. By noon the next day it has seen a few hundred pairs of shoes, a package delivery, a spilled coffee and somebody's wet umbrella. A day porter deals with all of that.
What a porter does
The route depends on the building. A porter's day usually includes:
- Restroom checks every hour or two, with supplies topped up
- Lobby, entrance and elevator wipe-downs
- Spill and mess response, with wet-floor signs where needed
- Trash runs from common areas and break rooms
- Conference room resets after meetings
- Setup and teardown for events and deliveries
Where it makes sense
Porter service pays off where traffic is constant and the standard is visible: medical and dental waiting rooms, multi-tenant lobbies, retail floors, schools, gyms and offices that host clients. For a ten-person office it's usually more than you need, and a night crew will do.
Hours and coverage
Most porter posts run four to eight hours a day, five days a week. Some buildings only need a midday restroom round and a lobby reset, which is a shorter shift. We set the hours from what the building actually sees, then adjust after the first month, once we know where the work is.
Porter and night crew together
Many buildings pair a porter with night cleaning. The porter keeps things presentable during the day, and the night crew does the heavy work while the floors are empty. We run both from one schedule so each crew knows what the other left.
Questions about day porters
What does a porter not do?
Porters keep the building tidy between cleanings. They don't replace the night crew's floor work and restroom detailing, and they don't run floor machines while people are in the building.
What happens at lunch or when the porter is sick?
We schedule backup so the post is covered. Tell us which hours can't go uncovered, such as the lunch rush or a clinic's busiest stretch, and we plan around them.
Can a porter handle events?
Yes. Setup, a mid-event restroom check and teardown are all fair work for a porter. Send us the event date and the room, and we'll add it to the shift.
